We just finished Season’s Greetings and Happy New Year celebrations. Like most of us, our friends and relatives may have left gifts but also water spills on our rugs. Here are a few tips for cleaning up water spills.
First thing is to soak up the water. Here are some tips - blot the water with a clean, white cloth. If there is a puddle of water, apply pressure with the cloth to soak up as much water as possible. Do not rub back and forth over the area. This can push the water further into the carpet.
Next use paper towels. Use enough so that you create a stack about1/8-inch thick.
Apply the paper towels to the wet area. Cover the paper towels with a heavy object – good use for that phone book that might have just been delivered. The paper towels should be in place for about 12 hours or overnight to absorb as much of the water as possible.
Remove the paper towels and restore the area of the carpet by fluffing it with a soft brush.
If the stain remains you can try the use of a steam iron. Use the steam from an iron or garment steamer by holding the steamer about 6 inches above the stain. Do not allow water from the steamer to hit the carpet.
This is very important: If the spill occurred on natural fiber carpet, such as wool or cotton, attempting to clean up the spill may actually cause more damage - contact a professional carpet cleaner.
